Seeing beyond the outcrop: Integration of ground-penetrating radar with digital outcrop models of a paleokarst system

چکیده
Abstract Paleokarst breccias are a common feature of sedimentary rift basins. The Billefjorden Trough in the High Arctic archipelago Svalbard is an example such rift. Here Carboniferous stratigraphy exhibits intervals paleokarst formed by gypsum dissolution. In this study we integrate digital outcrop models (DOMs) with 2D ground penetrating radar (GPR) survey to extrapolate external irregular geometries beyond outcrops. DOMs obtained through combining series overlapping photographs structure-from-motion photogrammetry, create mm- dm-resolution georeferenced DOMs. GPR typically used for surveying shallow subsurface and relies on detecting contrasts electro-magnetic permittivity. We defined three geophysical facies based their appearance GPR. By integrating data were able correlate reflection patterns features. chaotic nature seen both Key horizons profiles allow tying together observations between these methods. Furthermore, show that technique expands two-dimensional surface into three-dimensional domain, thus complementing, strengthening extending interpretations.

Outcrop fracture characterization on suppositional planes cutting through digital outcrop models (DOMs)
Conventional fracture data collection methods are usually implemented on planar surfaces or assuming they are planar; these methods may introduce sampling errors on uneven outcrop surfaces. Consequently, data collected on limited types of outcrop surfaces (mainly bedding surfaces) may not be a sufficient representation of fracture network characteristic in outcrops. Recent development of techni...
متن کاملIntegration of regional to outcrop digital data: 3D visualisation of multi-scale geological models
Multi-scale geological models contain three-dimensional, spatially referenced data, typically spanning at least six orders of magnitude from outcrop to regional scale. A large number of different geological and geophysical data sources can be combined into a single model. Established 3D visualisation methods that are widely used in hydrocarbon exploration and production for sub-surface data hav...
متن کاملSustainability and dynamics of outcrop-to-outcrop hydrothermal circulation
Most seafloor hydrothermal circulation occurs far from the magmatic influence of mid-ocean ridges, driving large flows of water, heat and solutes through volcanic rock outcrops on ridge flanks. Here we create three-dimensional simulations of ridge-flank hydrothermal circulation, flowing between and through seamounts, to determine what controls hydrogeological sustainability, flow rate and prefe...

Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) has recently gained a wide acceptance in the archaeological community as a method that can quickly and accurately locate buried archaeological features, artifacts, and important cultural strata in the near-surface. The GPR method has been especially effective in certain sediments and soils between about 20 cm and 5 m below the ground surface, where the targets to ...
